Upper Back Pain

Severe Upper Back Pain is as alarming as that!

Upper back pain is quite uncomfortable in its own right but when it is severe, it may make you do desperate stuff like overdosing yourself with painkillers. The upper back is a significant part of our anatomy which not only helps us stand upright but also supports the ribs and provides the cavity for our heart and lungs. It also houses the spinal chord and column and is one of the strongest parts of our body with great stability. Though the upper back pain is much less common than other back pains, it is recommended to go for treatment as soon as possible and delay may be hazardous.

Severe back pain in particular can be identified by simply looking at the intensity of the pain experienced. The pain may be bad enough to rouse you from your sleep in the night. And it just might be signaling any number of ailments from muscle strain to gall bladder inflammation. If the back pain is accompanied by other symptoms such as sudden weight loss or fever, then you are heading some serious situation.  The best option would be to immediately consult a doctor as this problem cannot be solved without medical intervention as its severity might lead to a blend of bone, muscle and cartilage. Though, a proper diagnosis may take time, severe upper back pain can usually be cured by physicians fairly easily.

Transient back ache, for example is normally a symptom of influenza. Muscle strains are also normally identified as back pain inducers. The synovial casing of the body which is well supplied with blood and nerves and surrounds the synovial membrane can become pinched or trapped causing severe ache of the upper back. The pinching results in the area becoming inflamed which in turn, leads to even more pain and stress. Symptoms may include muscle spasm, concentration of pain on a particular side, pain while walking, and no rediculopathy. The pain radiates down the legs and the buttocks. Flexion would induce relief, while expansion would exacerbate.

If the severe pain lasts more than three months, then there may be cause for worry but is more easily diagnosable. For adults below the age of 50, this may signal a spinal disc herniation, degenerative disc disease or isthmis spondylolisthesis. For adults over the age of 50, it may be osteoarthritis which is a bone degenerative disorder or spinal stenosis. Psychological triggers cannot also be ruled out and causes for back pain can range from stress, anger to repressed depression. In case, both physical as well as psychological aspects exist together, both must be treated together to make the healing process faster. For treatment, it would be best to exercise or go for physical therapy. Massage therapy or acupressure procedures would also help in alleviating the pain considerably.
