Living With Back Pain

Scoliosis and Social Security Disability

Scoliosis is a condition where a person experiences an abnormal curvature in the spine .In fact, everybody has a little bit of curve in their spines but when this curvature is very severe it is a medical problem. In some cases, the individual develops a leaning posture and he/she finds it difficult to carry out normal work.

In that case, you may need to take a break from your work and get the treatment. During the leave period, as per social security norms, you are entitled to get the benefits for your disability. Since, you have been paying the taxes  it's your right to get the benefits from them. But to get the benefits due to scoliosis, you need to file the case and in this case you have to follow a different approach.

People sometimes want to claim benefits through their disability and often they cite spinal disorders as their prime impairment. In the manuals of social security disability administration, it is not specifically mentioned as to whether people with scoliosis would get the benefits. This is decided by another kind of approval, called the Medical Vocational Allowance.  Now, let us discuss as to what is the methodology of the Medical Vocational Allowance.

Firstly, it is inquired whether the claimant can return to his normal work or not. If he can, then his case is rejected. If he cannot return to his normal work, his case is forwarded for the next stage. Here, it is evaluated whether the person can do any other work. Only if the person is incapable of doing any other form of work, he would be allowed to get the benefits. Thus, in most of the cases, it is through this route that people claim the social security  disability benefits.
