Backpacks May Cause Back Pain

A backpack is ideally meant to make the process of carrying weight simpler. But, in some cases a backpack could result in pack pain. To ensure that your kid does not have to deal with back pain on using a backpack, follow the given tips.

Keep note of the child's spine.
When the load of the backpack gets too much, the child's spinal position changes to accommodate the load. This could result in back pain and even temporarily compressed discs in some cases. If the weight of the backpack exceeds 26 lbs, then the spinal position begins to change. So, it is important that you keep a tab on the weight that your child is carrying.

Reduce the load.
Excessive weight of the backpack can cause the small discs in the spine to compress. Thus, it becomes important that you reduce the load. Ideally, the weight of the backpack should not be more than 10% of your child's weight.

Organize the weight.
At times, it could be possible that your child is carrying lesser items but still feels the strain on his back. The reason for the same could be poor organizing of the items. It is recommended that you place heavier items on the inside towards your back and lighter items like pen, paper, calculator etc towards the outside.

Opt for padded shoulder straps.
Go in for backpacks with padded shoulder straps. These straps are wider than the normal ones and help distribute the weight. Besides, these straps also offer cushioning, which ensures that the shoulder muscles do not feel any strain.

Use both the straps.
These days, many kids choose to use only one strap, either due to convenience or in a bid to make a fashion statement. Either ways, this could harm the body. Carrying the backpack on one shoulder transfers the weight on one side of the body. This could result in pain along with poor posture habits.

Keep the load in the center.
When organizing the backpack, you need to ensure that there is equal weight on either side. Having more weight on one side can lead to a side curve in the spine.

Don't let the straps loose.
When the straps of the bag are loose, they tend to move along with you. This puts a greater strain on your muscles. Thus, it is suggested that you tighten the straps and ensure that they fit your frame. This will make it easier for your body to balance the weight.

Use the waist belt
If the backpack comes with a waist belt, ensure that your child uses it. It offloads some of the weight from the shoulders, thereby reducing the possibilities of back and neck pain.

Keep these tips in mind and backpack would not be a source of trouble for your young one.
