The term 'sciatica' is broadly used to
describe any form of pain that radiates into the leg or back and leg
pain. Technically, it is not correct. True sciatica occurs when the
sciatic nerve is pinched or irritated.
Sciatica most frequently attacks people between 30 and 50 years of age. Often, a
particular event or injury does not cause sciatica, rather it may
develop as a result of general wear and tear of the structures of the
lower spine. Though, vast majority of people get over sciatica with time
and with back pain support, for some people, the pain from sciatica can
be severe and debilitating. Sciatica only affects one side of the lower
body, and the pain often radiates from the lower back all the way
through the back of the thigh and down through the leg causing lower
back pain and leg numbing.
Physical therapy can play a vital role
in relieving back pain. Once acute pain improves, physical therapist can
design a rehabilitation program to help prevent recurrent injuries and
chronic lower back pain. Rehabilitation typically includes exercises to
help correct your posture, strengthen the muscles supporting your back
and improve your flexibility. Your doctor will help find out the causes
of lower back pain and start physical therapy, exercise or both, as
early as possible. These exercises for relieving sciatica will be the
cornerstone of your low back pain treatment.
Low back pain exercises prompt your body to release endorphins- chemicals that prevent
pain signals from reaching your brain.
If you're new to exercises
for relieving sciatica, start out slowly and progress to at least 30
minutes most days. To prevent injury, consider learning proper weight
lifting techniques from a certified physical therapist.
