Pulmonic Stenosis In Dogs
Pulmonic stenosis is a kind of heart disease found in some breeds of dogs. Pulmonic stenosis refers to the narrowing of the pulmonary valve. As a result there is an obstruction in the flow of blood to the lungs from the heart and an extra load on the heart. On account of this obstruction, fluids get accumulated in the chest cavity or the abdomen and blood supply to other parts of the body is reduced.  Because of this condition some dogs can faint during physical exercise.

A common symptom is a slight noise when the dog breathes because of the narrowing of the pulmonary valve. Animals which faint often during exercises and are lethargic and have breathing difficulty might be suffering from pulmonary stenosis.

A Veterinarian generally can detect the condition by a simple physical examination of the animal. The vet may have to carry out an x ray or an electrocardiogram. In certain cases an echocardiography may be required. A special type of test called the Doppler echocardiography is done to detect the severity of the obstruction in the valve.

Balloon Valvuloplasty is an effective treatment to cure pulmonic stenosis in animals. Here a catheter is inserted into the heart of the animal and then a balloon is inflated to trim or dilate the defective valve.  In some cases surgery is also suggested by the vet to repair the obstruction causing valve. In certain cases diuretic drugs are also helpful.

Severe cases should be treated at the earliest as it premature death or heart failure is a possibility.    Balloon valvuloplasty is a very effective and safe method to try.
