Endometriosis is a health problem in women characterized by the abnormal growth of tissue that lines a women's uterus. Though the growth of tissue should be restricted to the uterus only, it sometimes extends to the fallopian tube, ovary and other areas in the pelvic region.
While this growth is normal if the woman is pregnant, it can be problematic in the absence of pregnancy. If the woman is not pregnant and still the growth of the tissue continues, it could result in to shedding of the blood lining. This leads to inflammation and development of cysts which in turn leads to back pain.
Back pain that stems as a result of endometriosis is a serious condition to deal with. But nevertheless, there are various treatment options that can help you combat the problem. The easiest way to deal with the problem is to use over the counter pain relieving medications. Using anti inflammatory drugs can also be of great help.
Ibuprofen is one of the best medicines that you can put to use. This medicine reduces the inflammation and consecutively provides relief from pain as well. But, make sure that you stick to the suggested dosage. These over the counter pain relievers work only in mild to moderate cases of pain.
In case over the counter pain relieving medications do not help, hormonal therapy or treatment may be desired. Birth control pills may be used as a part of hormonal therapy to treat endometriosis back pain. These pills regulate the hormonal balance of the system. But again, they are effective only for mild to moderate cases of the problem.
However, in severe cases gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists and antagonists may be used. These hormones lower the estrogen levels in a female body and shrink the pockets of endometrial tissue. Since the overgrowth of the tissue is stopped, the pain reduces considerably. Danazol, medroxyprogesteron and aromatase inhibitors work in a similar manner and provide relief from pain.
The last retort to treating back pain that stems from endometriosis is surgery. You can't stop the pain without stopping the endometrial tissue from going further. In severe cases, a surgery may be required to remove the tissue. Now, this surgery may be performed either via laparoscope or by the traditional method itself. A total hysterectomy may be required in extremely severe cases.
