Scoliosis Treatment
Abnormal curvature of the spine, which generally occurs in children and infants, is called scoliosis. Scoliosis has its roots in the Greek word “skoliosis” meaning crooked. Scoliosis doesn't occur suddenly, it is a slowly-developing condition which remains unnoticed and untreated during childhood, and then progresses into adulthood. Interestingly, this spine disorder is more common in girls than boys and usually occurs in the middle years of childhood. Explanations regarding the causes of scoliosis are innumerable. Some believe that it is purely genetical. Some blame this condition on the impingement and compression nerves of the degenerated nerve roots. Usually, the affected child might develop abnormally enlarged shoulders and huge waist and hips. The child might even develop an inclined position when standing.

A lot of issues have to be addressed before deciding on a particular scoliosis treatment. The physician has to define the range of the curvature of the spine, his curvature with respect to the height and weight, and the patient’s response to different types of medications. Children whose degree of curvature is around 25 to 40 degrees are recommended wearing braces. Braces do not perfectly cure the curvature, but they prevent any further progression of the curve and are especially recommended for growing children. Large degree of curvatures cannot be cured by braces. In conditions where the curve is more than 50 degrees, the doctor typically suggests for surgery. Surgery is aimed at joining the vertebrae and fusing the bones to prevent further progression of the curve. Sometimes, the surgeon may insert rods, hooks, and screws to hold the vertebrae together.
