Your guide to Back Pain Relief!

Sciatica
Sciatica is the pain which originates in the sciatic nerve. This nerve is located in the lower part of the body and goes down all the way to our leg. Sciatic pain occurs when there is an excessive build-up of pressure around this nerve. Usually it originates around the hip area but due to the presence of the nerve all the way to the leg, it spreads in the entire leg. Sometimes lower back pain accompanies sciatica and it becomes more severe and complicated. Further, sciatica is a problem in which the herniated lumber disc presses any of the nerve connected to sciatic nerve.

Sporting activities, heavy load lifting and other such activities are the main cause for sciatic pain. But sometimes these activities also bring about chronic neck and/or back pain which can be often mistaken for sciatica.

The most common symptom of sciatica is the pain in the thigh and foot (generally in the entire lower part of the foot). This pain is often more severe than what is felt during neck or back pain. The pain starts from buttocks and continues till the lower part of the foot.  The main symptoms can be listed as following:
* Thigh cramps
* Pain that runs from thigh to the lower part of the leg
* Pain with the sensation of needles in the leg
* Sensation of burning in the thigh

The sciatic nerve performs two main functions:
* Transfer of the signals between the leg and the brain.
* Collection of sensory information in the legs and transfer of that information to the brain.

Sciatica can be treated by yoga exercises and other form of exercises that doctors suggest.
