Upper back pain is the pain felt in the upper portion of human torso. However, it is not limited to upper back alone and can include pain of neck, shoulders, arms and hands. It is because the upper back is made up of neck, arms and shoulders connected to the spinal chord. The spinal chord consists of seven small structures called vertebrae. The neck is attached to the spinal chord through nerves that further extend up to the arms and hands. These nerves also go to the brain where they are attached to the skull. This whole structure is held together by some muscles and ligaments which are the points of origin of upper back pain.

Some of the main causes of upper back pain are:
* Muscular irritations or improper movement of joints are the most common causes of upper back pain.
* Disc injuries in the upper back.
* Excessive or no exercise.
