In a herniated disk, the nucleus tissue which is
located in the center of the disk is forced out of position. The maximum
chances of herniation are in the lower back or lumbar region. In a
herniated disc, the disc shifts and irritates the nearby nerves in that
spinal area. A disc becomes weak with age or after an injury.

The diagnosis of a herniated nucleus begin with
taking the history of the problem and also by physical examination. The
MRI scan is the most prevalent test for diagnosing a herniated disc. The
test is painless and results are accurate without any side-effects.
Hence, it has nearly replaced the other tests, such as the myelogram and
CAT scan. The best test to do (after X-rays) is herniated disc MRI if
you suspect a herniated disc.
