Anterior Cervical Discectomy

The tip of the spinal cord near the skull is called the cervical spine. The cervical spine is made up of 7 vertebrae and there are eight pairs of cervical nerves in that area. Besides that the spinal cord runs through the spine adjoining the discs of the spinal joints. Even nerve roots arise in the joints of the spine. There are many reasons for which a slipped disc in the cervical spine can happen and cause you lots of trouble. The slipped disc when spreads beyond the normal area of its confinement, exerts pressure on the spinal nerves or the nerve roots. This can lead to many medical complications.

Its always tried to treat the problem without surgery but if the case becomes severe or the patient is willing to fix it quick, the surgery for the cervical slipped disc is carried out. And the most common form of surgery used is called anterior cervical discectomy. This ACD has been proved to be one of the better surgical options for treating chronic neck pains and spinal nerve complications.

The main aim of the anterior cervical discectomy is to release the protruding nerves from the pressure of the ruptured disc. The disc that slips out either exert pressure on the spinal cord or the nerve roots. The surgery is called anterior because the cervical spine is reached out via a minute incision in front of your neck. The word anterior literally means front and since the surgery is done from the front portion of the neck it is called anterior surgery.

In the procedure of surgery the tissues of the neck are removed and the disc is cut out to release the nerve pressure from it. To maintain the gap, so formed a bone from pelvic region is inserted to keep the normal height of the spine. This is called bone craft. The bone slowly fuses th evertebra together.
