Sciatica pain is felt
in the buttocks and moves to the thighs, legs and then to the cuffs
and the ankles. The sciatica pain is felt when the main sciatic nerve
passing through the piriformis muscle near the buttock and the lumbar
spine gets compressed due to some reason.
The compression of the sciatic nerve
can be due to a bulging disc or herniated disc of the lumbar spine or
due to pregnancy-related stress on the area. The pain is unbearable
and requires complete medical assistance. Various methods are applied
for the treatment of sciatica pain. The treatments or the pain relief
application methods depend a lot on the nature of the sciatica nerve
pain.
Sciatica pain can be
relieved with heat and ice packing. Heat or ice packing can alleviate
the sciatica pain to a great extent. This is applicable in acute
pain, but when the condition becomes chronic, it is necessary to take
other steps to cure the pain. Medications like naproxen, ibuprofen,
COX-2 inhibitors, and analgesics are relevant in reducing the pain.
They also reduce the inflammation of the sciatica pain in the thighs
or the leg joints. Alternative treatments like acupuncture, massage
therapies and osteopaths and chiropractors can also provide sciatica
pain relief. They are practiced by various alternative medicine
practitioners. In severe cases of herniated disc-related sciatica,
the patient needs medical surgery called discectomy to remove the
disc or position it in a way that it doesn't pressurize the nerve to
cause the pain.
